Tamil Track of the Week – Needhaane

Musician & Kollywood music enthusiast ‘Nish Raj’ returns with the very popular Track of the week…

Kollywood never fails to attract! There are so many new artists entering the industry, it’s hard to sometimes keep track of them all.

Young music director Anirudh Ravichander arrived a few years back and hit gold with the film ‘’3.’’ Last year saw an influx of young singers & rappers from outside India given the opportunity to shine – artistes including USA’s Sid Sriram, UK’s Arjun, Canada’s Rajeev aka tha Prophecy, Rabbit Mac with his fellow Malaysian rappers from Psycho.unit, Sri Lanka’s Dinesh Kanagaratnam, super singer fame Pragathi Guruprasad, and many more.

From within India, Abhay Jodhpurkar, a former student of AR Rahman’s KM conservatory who was born in the north of India, gained recognition in Chennai for the Tamil song “Moongil Thottam” featured in the Mani Ratnam film “Kadal.”

It seems Chennai is a magnet for musical talent!

Our song of the week is by a new Music Director named Nivas Prasanna Krishnamoorthy, who is a disciple of Veena expert Rajesh Vaidhya and originally from Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. His debut into the industry took place with the  recently released soundtrack for “Thegidi,” a murder mystery.

Whilst the favourite of many seems to be “Yaar Ezhudhiyadho,”another song from the list stood out a little further. Sung by the one & only Shankar Mahadevan, our Tamil song of the week is called “Needhane.”

Needhane is an astonishing 7.19 mins, a huge length of time for any song, even a Kollywood one! But it seems to pass by quickly. A minute in and Shankar’s haunting voice builds up the suspense, at which point the beat drops and Shankar is given the opportunity to show his range. We really feel this song would be amazing when performed live as Nivas band do a great job keeping the song together! The real magic begins halfway into the song when Veena maestro ”Rajesh Vaidhya” is given his segment, a solo at first which then continues to an accompaniment with the band…

Nivas – Great job! We look forward to hearing more of your work.

Have a listen to the song below and let us know what you think! If you enjoyed it as much as we did, the album is available for purchase via iTunes.
